Solving Business Problems with Environmental Data

An award from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) will enable GCAP with Daniel Black and Associates along with the Universities of Bath and Manchester to quantify the forecast impacts of climate change on businesses. Aster Housing Association is the client 'end user. The project runs from Feb 2014 - Jan 2015.

ProAdapt

Supporting the roll out of the PROADAPT program in Central America (MIF/IDB). Identifying and assessing successful private sector oriented adaptation models in agricultural and/or food commodity groups in Honduras and Nicaragua; developing a framework road map for future support, and potential pilot projects for PROADAPT assistance. A joint GCAP-Grupo Laera project.

Strategic learning platform for climate compatible development in Pakistan

GCAP will assist WWF-Pakistan to learn how best to support community-based planning for climate adaptation actions in Keti Bunder and Kharo Chan, two pathfinder communities.

Planning for Resilience in East Africa through Policy, Adaptation, Research, and Economic Development (PREPARED)

A project aiming to strengthen the resiliency of East African economies, ecosystems, and communities, targeting the key development challenges of biodiversity conservation, sustainable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and climate change.

Economic Impact Assessment of Climate Change in Key Sectors in Nepal

The work is led by Integrated Development Society, Nepal working with GCAP and Practical Action Consulting: it is supported by the CDKN.

African Climate Resilience Alliance (ACCRA)

Participatory training on CCA and DRM to develop the institutional capacity of government and civil society organisation a part of a capacity building strategy; funded by Oxfam.

CDKN-funded project GIVRAPD

Delivering workshops as part of a project managed by CaribSave to understand the multiple social, economic, governance and environmental conditions that shape vulnerability and capacity to adapt to climate change in four Small Island Developing States (SIDS): in the Caribbean (St Lucia and Jamaica) and the Indian Ocean (Mauritius and Seychelles).

Mainstreaming of Climate Change

A guidance manual, screening tools and training program for Task Mangers on mainstreaming climate change adaptation has been integrated into the Bank’s project cycle.

Below is the first public deliverable from the project - a Climate Safeguard System booklet, developed in tandem with the screening tools. This has also been published on the African Development Bank website - where the French version is also available for download hereOpen publication

Structured training for a range of users and the translation of the CSS web-interface from English to French as been agreed as an addendum to the contract. 

Finance Tracking

Finalise internal methodology to track and report financial flows that support climate change mitigation and adaptation including training staff/monitor trends in climate related investment.

Framework agreement with the IDB

Partnering with several organisations through a framework agreement to perform adaptation assignments in Latin America over a two year period.

Ethiopia Country Program Climate Resilience: Phase Two

A GCAP-led consortium has completed Phase two of the Ethiopian Climate Resilience Programme. GCAP worked in partnership with GeoSAS, Vivid Economics and Excel Green, to develop the climate resilience component of Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE).

Review of Economic Impacts of Climate Change in Tanzania

Review of potential impacts of climate change on key sectors of the economy, stimulate government, private sector and civil society actions to develop and implement policies and programmes, provide an evidence base to inform and guide government’s position on adaptation and low carbon development, further alert public opinion and stimulate national debate on economic costs and benefits of a range of possible actions on adaptation and mitigation.

Climate Change Screening/Evaluation in Rwanda

Review of the DFID portfolio in Rwanda and recommendations for mainstreaming climate change adaptation and low carbon growth in planning and budget processes in Rwanda.  

 

Economic Impacts of Climate Change in Zanzibar

The work was led by GCAP, working with local partner organisations on the island including:

Kenya Climate Change Programme - Strengthening Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in Kenya 

Design a programme up to £18.5 Million planned for implementation over 5 years from 2011 to 2016, by developing a project memorandum.

Consultation on Climate Adaptation and Project Screening

Run seminar and consultation on approaches to screening climate risks and advise EIB managers on adaptation strategies.

Review of Vulnerability and Adaptation Decision Making in North-Eastern India

Provide technical support to a major project in India to ensure climate vulnerability and adaptation methods are robust.

Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Compendium (UN-ISDR and EUR-OPA)

Produce a compendium on Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) that focuses on European practices in governance, particularly considering the flow of information from researchers to policy makers and how the decision making process is commonly managed. Access the report here.

 

The University of Cape Town

Advising Google.org on Climate Adaptation working with the Climate Systems Analysis Group (CSAG) of the Univeristy of Cape Town.  Project planning phase included: narratives of prospective user experiences; social impact modeling; and co-ordination and training in Kenya.

Understanding of climate decision spaces and development of analytical methodologies based on socio-institutional learning and multi-attribute appraisals.

Lead Expert for the International Dimensions of Climate Change

Evaluatation of international risks and implications of climate change impacts for the UK. Tom Downing led the section on internal responses drawing upon work on risk assessments, perception and science and technology.

Research on climate adaptation pathways for agriculture with case studies in developing countries. Working with IIED and SEI, GCAP leads the methodological developments.
