Adaptation Academy (See Academy Blogs below)
The Adaptation Academy (Academy) is a distinctive business unit devoted to practical training and research on all issues relevant to adaptation. Developed in partnership with the Climate System's Analysis Group (CSAG) and the SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training (START), the Academy is designed to train adaptation practitioners in the most up-to-date best practices. The Adaptation Academy was created to serve as a nexus for climate change adaptation development with the goal to increase the effectiveness in which people approach climate adaptation. Through the Academy we hope to train the best and brightest people from international organizations, governments, the private-sector, NGOs, universities, community organisations and individuals who have the ability to influence the way climate adaptation is addressed. By properly training influential people we hope to have an exponential effect on the climate adaptation field as those people will train others, influence policies and practices, and play a strong role in shaping the climate adaptation field.
What is it?
The Adaptation Academy is an intensive training programme that is broken into two phases. The first phase is a 3-week Foundation Course which meets emerging professional needs and skill development to enable one to be effective in the areas of climate data and information use, risk and vulnerability assessment and communication, adaptation planning, decision-making, monitoring and evaluation in policy and practice. Our approach is based on the underlying premise that people learn best when they are active and take responsibility for their own learning, and can relate and apply it to their own context.
The second part of the Adaptation Academy consists of a unique contract learning model that builds off the training of the Foundation Course but is built around the participant’s selected area of focus. We do not aim to cover every topic during the Academy, nor to offer an introduction to all approaches. The professional training we offer is based on two decades of experience and is our unique approach to adaptation. Of course, the Academy is situated in the demands of organizations and practitioners. We do not offer didactic training in a single approach! We offer models of learning and project work that seeks effective solutions. As such, we hope to make the Academy a hot-house environment for further developing our own principles, shared approaches and effective tools.
Strengthening GCAP as a knowledge-led organization
The GCAP Adaptation Academy also initiates and engages in collaborative research activities. Insights from the Academy's research directly feed GCAP's training curriculum and project activities. This continuous process maintains and further strengthens GCAP's position as a knowledge-led organization.
To overcome the shortage in climate expertise, GCAP is developing professional training to “grow” its own consultants through the Adaptation Academy. The Academy trains and orients candidates, providing them with the necessary skills and understanding to provide valuable and robust adaptation support.
Climate adaptation is characterized by both urgency and rapidly developing understanding. It is critical for GCAP to ensure that its consultants - and the company as a whole - remain at the forefront of current understanding of adaptation planning, development processes, the climate system and the interpretation of models. The GCAP Academy provides facilities and time to enable consultants to engage in relevant research activities, carried out in collaboration with leading universities and research institutes.
